Prairie Point Bauble

A beautiful and unusual Christmas bauble

Approx. finished size 9cm x 14cm (3 1/2" x 5 1/2")

including the ribbon

What will you need?

  • Fabric in 2 colours
  • 5cm (2") polystyrene ball
  • 4mm silver pearl beads CF01 35401
  • 3mm wide ribbon for a loop
  • 15mm wide ribbon for the centre
  • Sequin pins
  • Needle, thread, glue

  • Cut the fabric into 8cm (3 1/8") squares

  • Fold each square in half point to point to make a triangle

  • Then fold again, point to point
  • You should have a triangle with one side longer than the others and all the raw edges on this side

  • Find the centre of the polystyrene ball, there is often already a mark showing on the balls
  • The longest part of the triangle needs to reach over the ball
  • Pin one corner of the fabric triangle into the centre

  • Pull it over to the opposite side centre and pin the other corner into the ball

  • Next, take a piece of fabric in a different colour and pin the points into the centre of the polystyrene ball as before

One side of the triangle will have one fold and the other side will have two. Make sure the double folds are on the same side so you get a neater finish.

  • Keep adding more triangles in the same way, alternating the colours
  • Push each pin into the ball next to the previous one, as they won't all go into the very centre

  • Keep adding triangles until you have cover the polystyrene ball

Because the fabric triangles are only pinned at the corners you can adjust them a little if they are not quite spaced out evenly

The other side of the ball will have a double fold on each triangle

  • Take a 20cm (8") piece of 3mm wide co-ordinating ribbon
  • Fold the raw end over and pin into the centre of the ball
  • To make it more secure you can dip the pin into glue before pushing it into the ball
  • Then take the ribbon over the ball and fold the raw end over and pin it into the centre of the ball
  • Now take a 20cm (8") piece of 15mm wide ribbon
  • sew a running stitch along one edge and gather it up to form a rosette
  • Do a couple of securing stitches to hold it together
  • Repeat this process so you have 2 little ribbon rosettes
  • Glue the rosettes to the centre of each side of the ball, covering the pins and rough ends
  • Now take the 4mm silver pearl beads and push a pin through the bead
  • Dip it in glue and push it through the centre of the rosette and into the polystyrene ball
  • Use three beads for each side of the ball
  • Leave the glue to dry
Your bauble is now finished and ready for hanging.

Why not experiment with different colours and sizes?

You could also use buttons, larger beads or ribbon flowers

in the centre.
