Folded Fabric Christmas Tree

A quick and easy Christmas decoration

Finished size is approx. 7.5cm x 12cm (3" x 4.5")

What will you need?

  • 1 x 18cm (7") circle of fabric
  • Metallic gold machine thread
  • 1/4m of gold pearl beading (2.5mm dia.)
  • 3mm wide ribbon (approx. 15cm)
  • Sewing thread
  • Needle, scissors, sewing machine

  • Fold your circle of fabric in half, right sides together
  • Stitch around the curved edge leaving an opening for turning

  • Turn your circle right side out
  • Stitch up the opening and press the semi-circle flat

  • Top stitch in gold thread, using a decorative stitch, around the curved edge

  • You can add more than one row of stitching and vary the thread colour if you prefer

  • Now stitch the pearl beading around the curved edge

If you use beading that is moulded to the string you can just cut the ends without fraying. There is no need to tuck the ends in.

  • Place your semi-circle down flat and measure approx. 12cm (4 4/3") across the straight edge from the left hand side. This will be the top of your tree
  • Measure approx. 7.5cm (3") along the curve and fold the fabric over

  • Then fold the fabric back across again, this piece should measure approx. 6.5cm (2.5") along the curve

  • Keep folding backwards and forwards in a concertina fashion until you run out of fabric

  • The folds should line up to make the straight sides of the tree
  • pin in place if necessary
  • You should have 4 folds spanning out from the point you made 12cm along the straight edge

  • You should end up with a triangular tree shape
  • Press the folds flat, taking care not to melt the beads

  • Take approx. 14cm of ribbon make a loop and fold over the raw edges.

  • Stitch the loop to the back of the tree at the top point
  • Use a tiny piece of the pearl beading to stitch across the top point at the base of the loop. You could also use a larger bead or a star shape

Your decoration is now ready for hanging

You can of course vary the fabric and thread colour and add more decoration if you choose.
