Fabric Triangle Purse

This great little purse

makes a lovely present or stocking filler

Approx. finished size is 4"

What will you need?

  • 2x 4 1/2" squares of patchwork fabric (outer)
  • 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" of patchwork fabric (lining)
  • 2x 4 1/2" squares of medium weight iron-on interfacing
  • 2" piece of ribbon no more than 1/2" wide
  • 5" Zip
  • Needle, thread, scissors, iron and a sewing machine

Striped fabrics work best for this purse.

You could also sew strips of fabric together to make

up the 4 1/2" squares.

  • Iron the interfacing onto the back of the 4 1/2" fabric squares
  • Lay the squares side by side
  • Rotate one square 90 degrees
  • Place the squares right sides together and stitch down one side using a 1/4" seam allowance

  • Open out and press the seam
  • You should have a rectangle measuring 4 1/2" x 8 1/2"

  • Place the zip face down on the left side of the fabric with the head slightly below the edge of the fabric

  • Tack/baste in place

  • Place the lining fabric face down on top of the patchwork panel and zip, so that the left-hand edges are all aligned
  • Stitch along this edge

  • Bring the right-hand edge of the patchwork fabric to the other side of the zip - so the edge of the front of the zip & the fabric are aligned
  • Tack/baste in place

  • Now bring the edge of the lining to the back edge of the zip - so that all the edges are now aligned

  • Stitch along this edge

  • You should end up with the zip down the centre with a 'loop' of fabric on both sides
  • Open the zip and turn the purse so that the lining fabric is on the outside
  • Do the zip up again
  • Flatten the purse out so that the zip is running down the centre of the fabric
  • Stitch along the bottom edge and zig zag or overlock the seam. You could cover the seam with bias binding if you prefer.
  • Trim off any excess zip
  • Turn the purse the right way out
  • Fold the ribbon to make a small loop & tack/baste to the top edge of the purse, to one side of the zip, so that the edge of the purse and the edge of the ribbon are together
  • Turn the purse inside out
  • Open out the top edge and fold the purse so that the zip is down one side
  • Pin in place and stitch along the edge
  • Then zig zag or overlock the seam
  • Open the zip & turn the purse the right way out
  • And your finished.
